The Grapefruit Diet has been around since the 1930's. There are many variations to this diet plan, but there is no one official diet plan. The single constant is to consume half a grapefruit or to drink grapefruit juice before every meal since grapefruit contains certain enzymes to help burn fat and shed pounds. Another requirement of this diet is to keep your daily intake to no more than 800 calories. For best results, consider eliminating junk foods when on the Grapefruit Diet. Although this particular diet plan has no regarded scientific basis, recent studies have shown that grapefruit contains fat-burning capabilities and acts as a metabolic stimulant.

When you're on the Grapefruit Diet, it's okay to eat meat, salad or vegetables until you're full. By choosing foods like certain fruits as oranges and grapefruits, veggies, whole grains and legumes that are high in fiber and water content, a person is allowed large portions on the Grapefruit Diet because they won't gain many calories. Try to avoid snacking and desserts, reduce the amount of coffee consumed and replace it with lots of water. Research shows that dieters are more successful on the Grapefruit Diet if they choose foods that stay in the system, like whole citrus, since it eliminates feelings of hunger.

With its high fiber content and low glycemic load, this diet is a perfect weight loss tool. "For years people have talked about the Grapefruit Diet, and some even swear by it, but now, we have data that grapefruit helps weight loss," said Dr. Fujioka, principal researcher of the Scripps Center who monitored insulin secretion of 100 participants in a Grapefruit Diet study. "Our study shows grapefruit can play a vital role in overall health and wellness, and in battling America's ever-growing obesity epidemic...Whether it's the properties of grapefruit or its ability to satiate appetites, grapefruit appeared to help with weight loss and decreased insulin levels leading to better health. It's good the Grapefruit Diet never lost its popularity among the public."

The grapefruit is a delicious food that makes a substantial contribution to the body's daily need for vitamins A, C and fiber, so pucker up and treat yourself to a sweet life!
