Liquid Diet
The Liquid Diet is a diet plan that either partially replaces meals or it can solely consist of fluid consumption. Fluids are typically in the form of teas, juices, and broth. Most liquid diet plans may not be suitable for long-term or excessive weight loss but they are often recommended by doctors before or after Bariatric Surgery or when people suffer from extreme obesity.
The Liquid Diet is recommended for surgeries like colonoscopies and sigmoidoscopies. In pre-operative cases, a Liquid Diet has many benefits, such as flushing the bowels while decreasing strain on the digestive system. In this case, the dieter on the diet plan can drink coffee, tea, sports drinks, broth and juices that have been strained. Individuals undergoing bariatric surgery may also be required to follow a fluid-only diet plan for up to ten days following the procedure.
In some cases, extreme obesity is treated with an all-liquid diet plan. Initially many patients see a change but the Liquid Diet must be monitored by a physician for any possible negative side-effects. A critique of the Liquid Diet is that it will not teach those suffering from obesity the crucial requirements of healthy eating to maintain the weight loss over a long period of time.
In conclusion, the Liquid Diet is great for the short-term because weight loss results can be achieved quickly, but when liquids, such as protein shakes, are eventually eliminated from the diet, dieters tend to gain the weight back.
